TRADITIONAL GERMAN TOYMAKING

With the closing of so many silver mines in the Ore Mountains around the mid 1800's, former miners had to look for new ways to feed their families. And in the town of Seiffen, they started making toys. Entire families were engaged in wooden toy-making, especially in the harsh winters. Families developed a high degree of specialization. An experienced turner would be working on turning animal shapes, another carved the animal figures out of it and yet another family took over the painting and the manufacture of small boxes. The majority of their products were taken to the toy markets of Nuremberg and redistributed from there. Today, the spirit of traditional, exquisite toy-making lives on and magically transports us to simpler times. These little toys make perfect christmas gifts for kids and are often bought as presents under the christmas tree.
